The Association
Founded in 2004 for the defence bar
The Association of Criminal Lawyers of Singapore was founded on 3 August 2004 by the late Subhas Anandan, who led it from the outset.
It exists for one part of the profession: counsel who appear for the defence. Its work is the independence of that role, the adequacy of representation before the courts, and the standard of practice in criminal law and procedure.
Members have appeared without charge for accused persons in the Community Court since 2006. The association is regularly asked for its view on changes to criminal procedure.
The Objects

(a) The independence of Counsel
To promote and defend the role and independence of Counsel for the defence.
(b) Representation in Court
To ensure that adequate legal representation by Counsel is available to all persons in Court.
(c) Knowledge and skill
To promote the acquisition of knowledge and skills of Counsel in the practice of criminal law and procedure.
(d) Development of the law
To contribute to the development of the legal profession and of the criminal law of Singapore.
